After learning the craft with avant-garde genius Yohji Yamamoto, Masaaki Homma founded mastermind JAPAN in 1997. Combining streetwear with luxury fabrics unseen at that time in the fashion industry was the start of Luxury streetwear by mixing quality with its signature skulls and bones logo. Each piece is made in Japan, and proudly displays it in the tags, along with a list of names of people that helped create the piece of clothing. Mastermind Japan shares very little about itself to the world. Keeping a low profile has helped creating mystery behind the label along with allowing the designs to speak for themselves. High-profile collaborations and the introduction of the brand’s iconic skull logo have since solidified mastermind JAPAN as a globally recognised brand. The designer’s concurrent venture, Mastermind WORLD, sees a more functionally minded perspective take hold. Mastermind Japan is the pioneer of Japanese streetwear introducing bold visual themes, sought-after signature graphics and innovative materials.
