Sébastien Meunier’s men’s AW17 is a nod to the house founder’s romantic punk rock vision for the brand, “L’Avenir” (French for ‘future’) and could be interpreted as statements of things to come.
Maintaining the labels DNA with elongated coats and shirting topped with lace and feather hats, the collection oozed romanticism seen in the labels earlier collections. The shirts have a fine delicacy contrasted against the heavy fabrics that have always been favoured when it comes to Ann Demeulemeester coats and jackets. Soft wide trousers were the main theme of the show with each look presenting them in a variation of fabrics that elegantly flowed down the runway.
The almost genderless looks were presented in three base colours, black, white and red with colour added through accessories such as feather, lace, neckties and the infamous Ann Dememulmeester sneakers.
“L’Avenir” was an apt non-title for the shows, the fashion house and Sébastien Meunier have to look to the future but with this collection we get the sense that they will move forward with the DNA intact.
